AUGUST HEREO'S WEEKEND HOLIDAY DATES

AUGUST HEREO'S WEEKEND HOLIDAY DATES : To confirm the Dates for the long weekend in August are the 14th and 15th August 2017.

anti Hijack Trust newslettter for July

July is midwinter ….. the nights and early mornings are bitterly cold so keeping our nearest & dearest warm are of great importance BUT please do not let your security programme lapse or be forgotten whatever the season  …… as there have been some horrid house break ins and robberies  reported in a lot of suburbs in Harare.  Please make sure that gates are locked before dark if they have been open during the day ... it is advisable to keep gates LOCKED at ALL times, this may seem ‘extra’ work but it has saved intruders entering during daylight hours.  Turn on outside security lights at twilight and check to make sure that all are in good working order.

There have been some horrid incidences on our roads recently involving ZRP with spikes which seem to be used or seen at most roadblocks again.... please be very aware and alert. Is it not time we see an improvement and the directives given regarding spikes adhered to?  Spikes seem to be the trend at most road blocks so be warned!   ‘Bogus’ Police seem still at large and once again its women on their own or the elderly also the new young driver that are the targets. Know your rights and stand your ground. Thank you to Big Sky for all the help and assistance given to the motorist.... be wise and have the road block check list and booklet in vehicles at all times.  Take advantage of the service offered to make sure you are compliant and ready to travel on the roads with confidence.

In August we have a long weekend which we all look forward to, so make sure you have all your alarms, remotes, sensors and backup systems in good working order so that the weekend can be a pleasant one with no ‘AFTER’ regrets. In this check, make a secure plan for your domestic animals to be well looked after in your absence ….. Trauma and distress caused by the injury or loss of our pets is devastating to say the least

Let’s ALL fight this crime together  - stay ALERT and SAFE !

History Society

The next talk of the History Society of Zimbabwe will be held at the Beit Hall, St George’s College on Sunday, 30th July 2017, at 1100h

This talk by Marie de Bruijn is a fabulous, well illustrated presentation and should not be missed by anyone with an interest in the early days of this country.

Please note that members are invited to picnic after the talk at the concrete tables under the trees near the Beit Hall on condition that they do not leave any litter behind.

The History Society is very indebted to the St. Georges headmaster, Kevin Atkinson, for permission to use this location.

SPEAKER: MARIE DE BRUIJN

Marie de Bruijn is a third generation Zimbabwean and has been a teacher for many years. Born in Mutare and trained as an infants’ teacher at the Teachers Training College, Bulawayo, she later obtained a BA Honours degree at UZ.

Ten of her forebears were Pioneers in their own right arriving in Zimbabwe between 1893 and 1895.  Her maternal grandmother, Maria Moolman, arrived in this country as a 15 year old girl with the Henry Steyn trek of 1895. Her many tales, as well as the diary her father Thomas Ferreira kept during the trek, inspired, in Marie, a love for the history of her forebears.

Marie has been involved in the Zimbabwe Pioneer Society for many years and is currently Chairperson of this organisation.

SUBJECT: LIFE ON THE TREK (The Trials and Tribulations of Life on the Steyn Trek from Cradock to Melsetter).

Throughout the ages people have decided to relocate to a new country because of political or economic reasons.  Many discover, even today, that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side but once having made the move, they have to embrace their new life fully. The arrival of the Europeans in Zimbabwe in the latter part of the 19th Century had all the same challenges.  LIFE ON THE TREK is the title of a talk based on the entries Marie de Bruijn's great grandfather made in his diary of 1895.  These notes are supplemented by the tales her grandmother told of life on the trek. A brief look will be taken at the motivation for the trek, the supplies needed, the hardships encountered and how people dealt with these. There are many lessons we can learn as we face different challenges in our own lives today.  In addition it is hoped to trace the route taken from Cradock in the Cape Province to Chimanimani, Zimbabwe, looking at the physical hardships that faced travellers and how that impacted on them.

Excerpts from the diary will be shared with members of the HSZ as Marie has translated it from the original pre-Afrikaans Dutch into Afrikaans and then into English.

Please note that the start of the presentation will be 1100h (Not at 1130h).

Can someone help?

These are the known details and the family would like further information.

Edward William Green born UK 23 May 1945 died at Wonderland nursery school, Greendale, Salisbury at 4pm on Friday 23 September 1949. The post mortem report dated Saturday 24th September 1949 states cause of death as "congenital cerebral aneurism – natural causes.”

A court case was held on October 7th, the verdict of which was “probably due to natural causes.” The boy's mother wrote in her diary …. And would have been better left as it was – nothing can bring him back to earth to us now …
However, she had also written on

…September 26th …. Went back to John Bishops (I think that was where his mother worked at the time) and had to rectify wild rumours – decided to put an announcement in the paper …

...September 27th …. Announcement in paper today which will put matters right, we hope …

Philip Green, the boy’s brother, would love to know exactly what went on.

I have been absent for some time due to the  death of my husband and the fact that I lost my sight. I have had my sight restored by the Council for the Blind in Norton, Zimbabwe and now can see again.
The wonderful staff and surgeon can be highly recommended to anyone and the care to attention and after care is comparable to any in the world.  I will now be able to post again!
